Fred Rickwood is the host of A Song for Europe, the national final which the Craggy Island and Rugged Island priests all enter in the hope of representing Ireland at the next Eurosong Contest.
He is the lover of the show's producer Charles Hedges, a topic that makes Ted uncomfortable due to the Church's position on homosexuality, which leads to the latter changing the subject and noting that he thought Fred looked a lot better the previous year since he appears drunk and disheveled but Charles tells him not to worry as he is fine when he gets up onstage, which proves to be true as he looks more presentable and sober once he starts the show.
However, after Ted and Dougal have won he is back to drinking heavily, sounding unintelligible and looking scruffy, and when Dick Byrne complains about the result he rambles on about why the Craggy Island priests' entry was better.
